estimated 1,46,000 children within the city of Mumbai are acutely under nourished (too thin for their height) of which 36,000 children suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition and are at 9 times the risk of dying compared to a normal child. Less than 1% of children with Severe Acute Malnutrition have access to appropriate treatment.

Fight Hunger Foundation’s objective is to contribute to the reduction of acute malnutrition related mortality and morbidity in children up to five years of age. We have been conducting integrated programs on nutrition and care practices in 149 villages in Khaknar block in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh and are soon expanding to cover five other districts-  Dhar, Panna, Sheopur, Umariya and Singroli.

10 months old Rajkumari Shariya could hardly whimper as we placed her on a weighing scale, to detect if she was acutely malnourished. We did not wait to see the measurement, as it was evident that this little girl was an emergency case and was severely malnourished. Her weight was far less than average and one could see the pain in her eyes, due to her inability to swallow food. If not treated immediately, she was in danger of not surviving.
